Disney Channels in the United Kingdom to Shut Down

After failing to agree on new deals with pay-TV platforms Sky and Virgin Media and the launch of Disney+ in the United Kingdom, Disney will shut down their three channels, Disney Channel, Disney XD, and Disney Junior at the end of September 2020. However, Disney's other brands, including Fox and Nat Geo, will still remain.

All content from the three channels in the United Kingdom will be exclusive to Disney+ from 1st October, Disney said Thursday, 25th June.

"The direct-to-consumer service, which garnered more than 54.5 million subscribers worldwide in its first seven months, will now premiere all the latest films, series and specials from the three Disney Channels, along with offering a rich and expansive back catalogue of Disney Channel titles in the U.K., including Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, Descendants 3 and Phineas and Ferb," Disney said. The Hollywood conglomerate added: "The Walt Disney Company remains committed to our kids channels business and continues to execute distribution agreements for Disney channels in many markets where Disney+ is also available, with the goal of giving our fans multiple entry points to our storytelling." - The Hollywood Reporter

The channels in the United Kingdom are not the first ones to shut down, with other channels worldwide already have experienced the same earlier.

The news come after the announcement of David Levine leaving Disney at the end of June 2020.
