In years Lucasfilm has changed the packaging design of their Star Wars products. Actually, the design changes when a new movie or a new series is coming out.
Hasbro, Thinkway Toys, JAKKS Pacific and Mattel, just to name a few, all change the packaging design when new toys are released ahead of a premiere. It is Lucasfilm that makes the design for the companies to use on their products.
LEGO is one of them who also has to use the new product packaging. In this post I will describe what packaging that have been used since 2015 when the 'Disney' logo begun appearing on the Star Wars products. Although The Walt Disney Company purchased Lucasfilm back in December 2012, their logo first appeared in 2015. LEGO actually made their first two Disney Star Wars sets and released them already in 2014, but no 'Disney' logo was used then.
The different designs are used on other LEGO products than the regular sets, but such products like keyrings, polybags or stationery are not counted. Regular LEGO Star Wars sets like Advent Calendars, Helmets, UCS and similar, Buildable Figures and Microfighters feature their own design and are not affected by the different designs.
The very first packa ng design for the Disney Star Wars products featured a Stormtrooper and has the colour of orange and grey. The design is inspired by the first Disney TV series called 'Star Wars Rebels' which premiered on Disney Channel and Disney XD in 2014. The design is featured on 21 products released between June 2014 and August 2015. Products released in that period are based on: A New Hope, Attack of the Clones, Battlefront, Clone Wars (2003), Rebels, Return of the Jedi, The Clone Wars, The Phantom Menace.
Used between October 2016 and June 2017, the design features a Death Trooper to promote 'Rogue One: A Star Wars Story'. 24 products was released at that time and saw models from the titles: A New Hope, Attack of the Clones, Rebels, Return of the Jedi, Revenge of the Sith, Rogue One, The Clone Wars, The Force Awakens, The Freemaker Adventures, The Phantom Menace
The next design features Rey, Poe and Finn and is promoting 'The Last Jedi'. Released between September 2017 and October 2018, the packaging is used for 24 sets, based on the following titles: A New Hope, Attack of the Clones, The Clone Wars, The Empire Strikes Back, The Last Jedi.
To promote 'Solo: A Star Wars Story' a new design was used, and it is that design with most characters yet, showing a young Han Solo, Chewbacca, Qi'ra and Lando Calrissian. The design was only used in April and August 2018 for products based on the movie, a total of 8 sets.
The 'LEGO Star Wars Legacy/Star Wars 20 Years' design has been used since January 2019. The design features Darth Vader and is used to celebrate the 20th anniversary of LEGO Star Wars as the very first LEGO Star Wars set was released in 1999. The design has been featured on 29 sets so far, still being used as of December 2020. Titles include: A New Hope, Battlefront, Galaxy's Edge (Disney Parks), Resistance (TV series), Return of the Jedi, Revenge of the Sith, Rogue One, The Empire Strikes Back, The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, The Mandalorian, The Rise of Skywalker.
A similar design to the 'LEGO Star Wars Legacy/Star Wars 20 Years' design was used to the Star Wars Boost set. Darth Vader has been replaced by the 'Boost' logo. Released in June 2019.
This is the last design of 2020 and is still reusing the Legacy design but is using a Clone Trooper from the 332nd Company as seen in Star Wars: The Clone Wars Season 7. It is used for 2 sets based on the TV series which have been released in August 2020.
Be sure to check back at a later date to be updated on the packaging designs.
