All the Disney Remakes in Development We Know So Far

17 movies based on Disney animated movies.


Since 2010 we have got many Disney remakes of their animated movies: The Jungle Book, Alice in Wonderland, Beauty and the Beast, and Cinderella. Even Pete's Dragon from 1977, the movie that combines live-action with animation got a remake back in 2016. Also Maleficent, a movie that tells the story of the evil villain from Sleeping Beauty.

But it's not ending. There are 17 movies in development which we know so far. Both new remakes of the animated movies but also sequels and spin-offs. And already 3 of them will be released in 2019.

Let's take a look of the 17 movies we can get excited to watch. The release date is official US release.


Dumbo - 29th March 2019

The movie was announced in 2014 but now it will finally be released this year. The movie is directed by Tim Burton who also directed the Alice in Wonderland remakes, and written by Ehren Kruger.


Aladdin - 24th May 2019

Aladdin is the second Disney live-action remake to be released in 2019. The movie is a musical and it will feature two new songs by the 20th Century Fox's The Greatest Showman composers, Pasek and Paul. Mena Massoud stars as Aladdin with Naomi Scott (Lemonade Mouth) as Princess Jasmine. Will Smith will take the role as Genie.


The Lion King - 29th July 2019

The beloved animated movie The Lion King will get a remake in 2019 too. The movie is directed by Jon Favreau who also directed The Jungle Book from 2016. The voice cast consists of Donald Glover as Simba, Seth Rogen and Billy Eichner as Pumbaa and Timon, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Scar, John Oliver as Zazu, and Beyoncé as Nala. James Earl Jones will again reprise his role as Mufasa. Hans Zimmer is set to score the movie, with a new song from Beyoncé and Elton John included.


Mulan - 19th June 2020

The movie was planned to be a non-musical but will now be an all-singing and all-singing after an outcry from fans. The cast is all Asian, with Yifei Liu as Mulan, Jet Li as The Emperor, Donnie Yen as Commander Tung, and Yoson An as Chen Honghui who will be Mulan's love interest. Li Shang who was a character in the 1998 animated movie will not be featured. The movie is set to be directed by Niki Caro.


Maleficent 2 - 29th May 2020

Maleficent 2 is not a remake but a sequel to the 2014 movie Maleficent, which told the story of Sleeping Beauty from the wicked fairy's point of view. Angelina Jolie will reprise her role as Maleficent, with other casts to return are Elle Fanning as Aurora, Imelda Staunton, Juno Temple and Leslie Manville as the good fairies, and Sam Riley as Diaval. New cast members include Michelle Pfeiffer as Queen Ingrith, Ed Skrein as a villain, and Chiwetel Ejiofor as a rumoured romantic interest for Maleficent. The movie will take place some years after the first movie, with Aurora soon to become queen and trying to form an alliance with Maleficent.


Lady and the Tramp

Lady and the Tramp will be another remake of an animated Disney movie. The movie will be directed by Charlie Bean and is set to be released directly to Disney's new streaming service Disney+, but with an unknown release date yet.


Cruella

Another live-action movie based on the 101 Dalmatians will be released sometime in the future. At the beginning of the 21st century, two live-action movies starring Glenn Close were released. The new movie will star Emma Stone as Cruella, and the movie will be told from the villain's point of view.


Lilo & Stitch

The first movie from the 21st Century to get a remake is Lilo & Stitch from 2002. Not much is known right now about the movie, other than the movie will be written by Mike Van Waes (The Crooked Man) and will feature live-action with CGI.


The Hunchback of Notre Dame

The movie will be a remake of the 1996 movie of the same name. It will be executive produced by Josh Gad who might star as Quasimodo. The remake should be a musical like it's originally animated movie.


The Little Mermaid

The Little Mermaid will be a remake of the 1989 movie and has been in development for some years now. It is rumoured to be Rob Marshall who will be directing the movie, returning to Disney after directing Mary Poppins Returns from 2018. The movie is said to contain new music from Alan Menken and Lin Manuel Miranda. Neither a release date or actors have been found for the movie, although Zendaya who has starred in a lot of Disney Channel movies and series is rumoured.


The Sword in the Stone

The Sword in the Stone will also be a remake of another Disney animated movie. It is set to be released on Disney+. The movie was said to start filming in Ireland in September 2018 with Juan Carlos Fresnadillo directing. No other details have been given since then.


Pinocchio

A live-action remake of Pinocchio should be in development but it has been in a slow development with two directors leaving the project.


Prince Charming

Disney announced in 2015 that there would be a live-action movie of Cinderella's love interest, Prince Charming. Disney revealed in November 2017 that Stephen Chbosky would write and direct, and although the movie will focus on Prince Charming, it will be told from his brother's point of view.


The Jungle Book 2

This movie will be a sequel to the first movie from 2016. Jon Favreau will once again return to direct the movie. With Jon focusing on the The Lion King remake and the huge work the CGI, this could take some time before we get more details. It is said that the movie will feature discarded ideas from the original animated movie from 1967.


Tink

Tinkerbell was a character in the 1953 movie Peter Pan, and in the 21st century, she got her very own animated movies focusing on her life before Peter Pan. Although no details have been given since 2015, a live-action movie of Tinkerbell should be in development.


Peter Pan

David Lowery directed the 2016 remake of Pete's Dragon and it seems that he will be directing a live-action adaption of Peter Pan. Unfortunately, the development has been slow in recent years.


Rose Red

A remake of the very first Disney animated movie, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs from 1937 is in development. The movie is titled Rose Red and will be in a totally different way. The movie will focus on Snow White's sister and it is said to pick up the moments after Snow White bites the poisoned apple, leaving Rose Red to embark upon a quest with the seven dwarfs to find a cure. It's been reported that Disney will use Brie Larson as Rose Red, the star of Marvel's Captain Marvel.
