Disney's First Bisexual Lead Character is in Disney Channel's The Owl House

Disney's very first bisexual lead character is Luz Noceda, a 14-year-old Dominican-American girl, who stars in Disney Channel's new series, The Owl House.

The series is focused upon the character Luz who finds a portal by accident and travels to a magical world. Here she meets the witch, Eda, and the warrior, King. Although Luz has no magical abilities, she serves as the apprentice of Eda at the Owl House to become a witch herself.

Dana Terrace, the creator of The Owl House, was told by certain Disney leadership when the series was greenlit that she could not represent an LGBTQ+ character on Disney Channel. Terrace identifies herself as bisexual. She wanted to write about a character as bisexual and tried to push Disney to allow that, she writes on her Twitter.

Although The Owl House marks Disney's first bisexual lead character, this is not the first time an LGBTQ+ character has appeared on-screen. Earlier this year Pixar released a short film as part of the series "SparkShorts" on Disney's streaming service, Disney+. Titled "Out", the short film is focusing on a gay lead character.

But even though Disney LGBTQ+ lead characters first appear in 2020, many LGBTQ+ characters have appeared over the last decade, like in the Pixar movies "Finding Dory" and "Onward, and the Disney movie "Beauty and the Beast" (2017). Also in Disney TV series as "The Lodge", "Star vs. the Forces of Evil", "Good Luck Charlie", and "Andi Mack" has it been featured.

While many will find it weird, disgusting, or inappropriate for younger children, this will help many people, young and old, to not feel shame of "not being normal" - because it should be accepted as normal.

Not only does Disney try to focus on LGBTQ+ on-screen, but ever since 2018, Disney Store/shopDisney has released a collection around June called "Rainbow Collection" to celebrate the Pride.

Hopefully, the subject will be expanded in the future.
